When he’s healthy and on his game, there are few quarterbacks better than Jay Cutler of the Bears. Problem is, Cutler hasn’t been healthy through much of his career in Chicago, and injuries might be a determining factor in whether the Bears re-up with the quarterback in the off-season.

Cutler, whose five-year, $49.8 deal expires after this season, is out with an ankle injury after missing time with a groin problem. It’s uncertain when he’ll be back, but until early this past week, he was still wearing a hard cast on the ankle. Since being traded from the Broncos in 2009, Cutler has had only one season where he has played in all 16 games.

And with backup Josh McCown doing reasonably well in Cutler’s absence, the Bears may not be inclined to invest big dollars in the 30-year-old Cutler.

Remember, Cutler was acquired when Jerry Angelo was the general manager and Lovie Smith was the head coach. Both men have since replaced by GM Phil Emery and head coach Marc Trestman.
