Chan Gailey wants to return to Todd Bowles’ staff next season

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — Chan Gailey wants a chance to make it right.

The Jets offensive coordinator said Thursday that he hopes to be back on Todd Bowles’ staff next season and be a part of their turnaround.

“I’m looking forward to everything that we can do to make this thing the way it needs to be,” said Gailey, who turns 65 in January.

The Jets are 24th in total offense (328 yards per game), 29th in points per game (17.2) and 27th in passing yards (223.0).

Ryan Fitzpatrick’s regression from a franchise-record 31 touchdowns last season to 10 TDs and 14 interceptions is a big reason for that. But Gailey’s play-calling has also come under fire. Asked how much of their offensive struggles falls on him, he said: “All of it. It all falls on me. That’s my job.”

But the assistant coach said the team’s 3-9 record hasn’t affected his desire to return.

“No, it hasn’t,” Gailey said, adding that he’s already talked to Bowles about his future after this season. “You’re a competitor. I don’t care who you are, you wouldn’t be in this business, or stay in this business, if you weren’t. People are competitors — I am.”

Some view Bowles as being on the hot seat, which invariably puts the status of his staff in question. But Gailey, a longtime college and NFL coach, said he’s not worried about his job security. “I’ve been through this enough times, you have to do the best you can do every day,” he said. “That’s what you get up and do, try to do the best you can every day. You can’t let it affect who you are, and what you’re trying to get done.”

Muhammad Wilkerson and Lorenzo Mauldin (ankles) and Calvin Pryor (concussion) were limited.
