Darrelle Revis ruled out for Steelers game

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Darrelle Revis won't be making the trip to Pittsburgh.

The Jets cornerback is out of Sunday's game against the Steelers because of the concussion he suffered last week against the Bills. Revis was not cleared for contact and will not even travel with the team to Pittsburgh.

"We followed NFL protocol and we'll always follow NFL protocol when it comes to concussions," Jets coach Rex Ryan said after practice Friday. "Darrelle is ruled out for the game."

The Jets also will be without tight end Dustin Keller (hamstring), linebacker Bryan Thomas (hamstring) and offensive lineman Dennis Landolt (knee). But the loss of Revis, especially against big-play receivers Mike Wallace and Antonio Brown, is huge for the Jets, who are shooting for a 2-0 start as they return to Pittsburgh for the first time since losing the AFC Championship Game in January 2011.

Kyle Wilson, who had an interception last week against Buffalo, will start in Revis' place. Ryan said Ellis Lankster and Isaiah Trufant will see more time in nickel and dime packages. The Jets also will get veteran safety Eric Smith back after he missed the Buffalo game with a knee injury.

"With Darrelle not playing, we have a lot of confidence in Kyle Wilson," Ryan said. "I always believe that the guys that step up and replace the guy have to maintain that level or even a little better. In this case, we'll take a little less with the Darrelle Revis deal."

Revis said he felt good Friday after going through warm-ups and some team drills for the first time this week, but he took part in limited reps because he wasn't fully cleared. Despite wanting to play, Revis, who is from Aliquippa, Pa., and played for the University of Pittsburgh, understands the seriousness of his situation.

"It's my head," Revis said. "It's a head injury. I got to do the best I can to make sure I'm healthy first, and the team does as well. Everybody's looking out for my best interest. And I think that's the focus here -- to just make sure I'm 100 percent before I step out on the field."

He sounds confident that he'll return next week in Miami.

The Jets hope the same for Keller. He aggravated his hamstring injury Wednesday and didn't practice the past two days. As insurance, the Jets signed tight end Dedrick Epps from Chicago's practice squad to their active roster Friday.Notes & quotes:Tim Tebow dismissed a report that he will seek a trade from the Jets this offseason if he's not used more.
