The Jets interviewed Adam Gase on Friday for their coaching vacancy, the team announced. It’s their second known interview.

The former Dolphins head coach was fired Monday after three years in Miami. The Dolphins went 23-25 under Gase and made the playoffs in his first season.

He is known as an offensive coach and for his work with quarterbacks. The Jets are expected to hire someone who can help develop Sam Darnold.

Most of the known candidates for the job, which opened Sunday when the Jets fired Todd Bowles, have an offensive background.

Gase had success as Denver’s offensive coordinator the year Peyton Manning threw an NFL-record 55 touchdown passes. He didn’t have the same success — or talent — in Miami, where Ryan Tannehill, Matt Moore, Jay Cutler and Brock Osweiler were his quarterbacks.

Miami never became an offensive juggernaut, but some of that could be traced to the quarterback situation. Tannehill was Gase’s No. 1 quarterback, but he has played in only 24 regular-season games the last three years and hasn’t been able to stay healthy.

Gase’s Dolphins went 5-1 against the Jets and won both games this season. The Dolphins were in the playoff chase at 7-6 but lost their last three games.

Gase was a quarterbacks coach with the Lions and wide receivers coach and quarterbacks coach with the Broncos before becoming their offensive coordinator. He also spent a year as the Bears’ offensive coordinator before becoming the Dolphins’ head coach.

The Jets’ first interview was with Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy on Wednesday in Kansas City. Bieniemy is a popular candidate; he has interviewed or is scheduled to meet with the Cardinals, Dolphins and Bengals.

Kansas City coach Andy Reid is the primary play-caller for the high-powered Chiefs, but Bieniemy has worked closely with Patrick Mahomes, who is an MVP candidate this year.

The Jets also are expected to interview former Packers coach Mike McCarthy, former Colts and Lions coach Jim Caldwell and college coach Kliff Kingsbury. The former Texas A&M and Texas Tech coach has worked with Mahomes, Johnny Manziel and Baker Mayfield.

Other known candidates are Cowboys passing game coordinator and defensive backs coach Kris Richard and Buccaneers offensive coordinator Todd Monken. The Jets have requested permission to speak with both men.

ESPN reported that the Jets also have interest in Baylor coach Matt Rhule, who was an assistant offensive line coach in 2012 for the Giants under Tom Coughlin.

Jets officials are in Texas this weekend to interview Richard, likely Sunday, as the Cowboys have a playoff game Saturday. They also could meet with Rhule while they’re in Texas.

Notes & quotes: The Jets signed defensive lineman Charles Tapper, a fourth-round pick of the Cowboys in 2016, and defensive back Tevaughn Campbell to reserve/future contracts. Campbell has been playing for Montreal in the CFL.
