Jets sign QB Stanton, WR Schilens
After staying unusually quiet through the first three days of free agency, the Jets made a couple of moves Friday, agreeing to terms with quarterback Drew Stanton and wide receiver Chaz Schilens.
Stanton, 27, who received a one-year deal reportedly worth $1.25 million, will serve as Mark Sanchez's primary backup, a job that was held by Mark Brunell the past three seasons.
Stanton spent his first four NFL seasons with the Lions. He didn't see any action in 2011 as starting quarterback Matthew Stafford remained healthy.
Stanton appeared in six games in 2010, starting three, and completed 69 of 119 attempts for 780 yards with four touchdown passes and three interceptions.
"I'm extremely excited to get an opportunity to come to an organization like this," Stanton said. "My goal is to help Mark produce on the field and to help this organization win football games.''
Schilens, 26, a 6-4, 225-pounder, caught 23 passes for 271 yards and two touchdowns this past season with the Raiders. He was a bit injury-prone in four years in Oakland but recorded seven touchdowns and 902 yards on 72 receptions.
Terms of Schilens' deal weren't immediately available.
"It was just too good a place to leave ," Schilens said of the Jets. "It was a combination of everything that impressed me."
The Jets aren't done trying to bolster their roster and are looking for safety help.
Reggie Nelson was in for a visit Friday, according to a source. LaRon Landry, according to a source, is expected to come in for a visit this weekend.
Nelson, 28, spent the last two years with the Bengals. Landry, 27, often was injured these past two seasons with the Redskins, playing in only 17 games.
Notes & quotes: Former Jets linebacker Jamaal Westerman signed a one-year deal with the Dolphins. Westerman wasn't tendered by the Jets, making him an unrestricted free agent.
