FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — The Jets got some good news on the eve of training camp.
Edge rusher Carl Lawson, offensive tackle Mekhi Becton and tight end C.J. Uzomah were activated Tuesday from the Physically Unable to Perform list. They’re eligible to practice when the Jets open camp on Wednesday.
Lawson, the Jets’ big 2021 free-agent signing, missed all of last season after rupturing his Achilles in August. Becton fractured his kneecap in Week 1 last year and didn’t return, despite the original prognosis that he would miss 4-to-8 weeks.
Uzomah, signed this offseason away from the Bengals, has been dealing with a knee issue since getting hurt in the AFC Championship game in Kansas City.
The Jets are expecting big contributions from all three players this season.
A slimmer Becton
The Jets official Twitter page posted a photo of Becton reporting for camp and the big tackle wasn’t as big. Becton, who reportedly was over 400 pounds last year, has shed some weight coming into this important season for him.
“I’ve seen him,” second-year guard Alijah Vera-Tucker said. “That put a smile on his face, seeing my dog Mekhi. I know he was working this offseason. He was telling me about it. He looked good coming in. I could tell that he has that mindset that he’s ready to prove himself. He seems ready to me, so let’s get to it.”
The 6-7 Becton’s weight has been a major topic and cause for concern. Robert Saleh said Becton needed to return to the Jets in the best physical shape possible and be ready to compete with George Fant for the starting left tackle job.
Becton seems to have done that. He said in June that he would make his doubters “eat their words.”
Fant (knee) will start camp on the PUP list.
More roster moves
The Jets placed running back Tevin Coleman on the active/non-football injury list . . . They also signed former Canadian Football League quarterback Chris Streveler, wide receiver/returner Rashard Davis, who recently played in the USFL, and offensive lineman Isaiah Williams, who was on their practice team last year . . . The Jets released wide receiver DJ Montgomery, cornerback Craig James and offensive lineman Dru Samia.
