Massaquoi signing could mean trouble for Braylon

The Jets announced they signed wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi after he worked out with the team Thursday.

The 6-2 wideout was a second-round pick of the Browns in 2009 and signed a two-year, $5.6-million with the Jaguars in April.

He was cut Monday.

Over the past four seasons, Massaquoi has amassed 1,745 receiving yards and seven touchdowns on 118 catches in 54 games.

Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said the Jets are “excited” to have him on their roster now because their receiving corps is "a little bit nicked up.” Veteran Braylon Edwards has not practiced in four days due to a “leg injury,” according to Ryan, and Clyde Gates (left shoulder) is uncertain if he’ll play Saturday vs. the Giants.

Rex Ryan said he was high on the receiver back in 2009 – and even added that Massaquoi reminds him of a certain former Jet.

“He kind of reminds me of Jerricho Cotchery,” the Jets coach said of the current Steeler. “When he came out, [he was] a tremendous person and a good football player. Hopefully we’ll see that from him here."

Said Mornhinweg: “First of all, our personnel men, [general manager] John [Idzik] and his crew have done just an outstanding job. Here’s another man that I think can really help us. He’s a good-sized young man with just excellent hands. He’s a very good route-runner…He’s a tough guy. Has been in this system just a little bit. I talked to [receivers coach] Sanjay [Lal] about it. I think he’s quite familiar with, at least, some of our terminology. So that’ll be a good thing for him. We’re nicked up a little bit at that spot. So we’re sure excited he’s a part of our football team.”

In corresponding moves, the Jets released TE Mike Shanahan and WR Titus Ryan.

As for Edwards, it’s unclear just how safe his roster spot is at the moment. The signing of Massaquoi, of course, hasn’t helped his chances.

“Yeah, he’s been out for a few days. I don’t know if he’ll play (Saturday vs. the Giants),” Ryan said when asked about Edwards’ injury. “Again, we’ll address that, I think, with the trainers and things. He’s had a leg injury. I don’t know exactly what it is. He’s had a little leg [injury] and he’s also been on a pitch count. But we’ll get you that information as soon as we’re willing to say a guy’s not playing or he is playing.” 

Braylon's good buddy, Kellen Winslow, said he'd be obviously "disappointed" if Edwards didn't make the cut. But after eight years in the NFL, the Jets tight end said he's seen numerous players come and go. 

“This league is just crazy," Winslow said. "As a grown man, you just have to take care of yourself. That’s a part of the business. People get cut – I’ve been cut. So it happens. And you just can’t do much about it.

"I’d be disappointed if he didn’t make the team. But at the same time, I have to take care of myself also. I have to make the team.”
