A refocused Rex Ryan claimed last season that he was going to be more involved on the offense. Now, he says he returning his "roots."

The Jets coach told The Daily News recently that he'll be doing the play-calling on defense, rather than Dennis Thurman, his former secondary coach who was promoted to defensive coordinator this offseason.

"Dennis and I worked side-by-side with each other literally for years now," Ryan said, according to the newspaper. "It's something that we talked about and we want to do. I want Dennis to just be totally involved like he always is, but I'll make the calls [and have] the final say on the calls. But again, the process will be very similar."

Thurman, on a conference call with reporters, said two weeks ago that he had "no problem" with Ryan calling the plays.

"If we do it like we've done in the past," Thurman said, "my input will always be there."
