Geno Smith was talking about himself and the Jets, but he might as well have been talking about me and my picks, or namely, one selection last week.

"Obviously, we are frustrated," Smith told reporters earlier this week, before adding, "We better be able to step it up."

I, too, was frustrated after the Jets' 31-17 loss to Denver. Why? Because I was the only one of Newsday's staff to select the Jets to cover the 9½-point spread. If Geno doesn't throw the pick-6 in the final seconds, I cover. If the officials had called Smith for a safety (as replays showed it was) the play before the interception, I most likely cover. Instead, Smith threw an INT to Aqib Talib, who returned it for a TD and it's game, set, match. No cover!

So now what? The Jets' season is, basically, done, unless they go on a winning streak for the ages. That's most likely not going to happen. However, I'm not sure the Patriots cover a big number in a divisional game on a short week. Plus, the Pats lost LB Jerod Mayo (team-high 53 tackles) and RB Stevan Ridley (team-best 340 yards rushing) to season-ending injuries in last week's win against the Bills.

New England is 0-4 against the spread (ATS) in its last four games as favorites of nine or more points. A few more bright spots for the Jets: The underdog and road team has covered four of the last five meetings. Win one for Rexy and cover one for me, Gang Green. You owe us!

The pick: Jets
