NFL Power Rankings: Chargers make their move ... again
1. Falcons (8-2) (1): Not an easy task to play at much-improved Rams after emotional last-second comeback win over Ravens the week before. But Matt Ryan & Co. dispatch the Rams convincingly in 34-17 win.
2. Patriots (8-2) (2): You asked for a shootout, and you got one. Tom Brady outduels Peyton Manning in another Pats-Colts epic. Now it’s on to Lions for Turkey Day matchup.
3. Eagles (7-3) (3): It’s not nearly as easy as putting up 59 against the Redskins, but Michael Vick does just enough – with plenty of help from LeSean McCoy – to hold off the Giants’ frantic comeback bid at the Linc.
4. Steelers (7-3) (4): Not quite the back-to-the-future rendition of Raiders-Steelers that we’d hoped for, especially not with the Steelers looking so dominant in thrashing their ‘70s rivals.
5. Jets (8-2) (5): Jets’ last four wins have been of the dramatic variety. Can they keep getting away with these fourth-quarter or OT comebacks?
6. Packers (7-3) (6): Another week, another blowout victory, another coach firing. For second time this season, Packers rout opposition – this time Brett Favre’s Vikings – and the coach – this time Brad Childress – gets the gate the next day. Two weeks ago, it was Wade Phillips getting axed after a huge win over the Cowboys at Lambeau.
7. Saints (7-3) (7): Looks like the early-season wobbles are behind the Saints, who are looking more like defending Super Bowl champs than hangover victims.
8. Ravens (7-3) (9): Only blemish in blowout win in Carolina was a argument between QB Joe Flacco and WR Derrick Mason, but coach John Harbaugh insists it’s no biggie.
9. Buccaneers (7-3) (11): The turnaround continues: Josh Freeman and the boys shut out the 49ers 21-0 to stay in the NFC South race and remain viable for a wild card.
10. Chargers (5-5) (13): Here we go again: Chargers overcome sluggish start to get on a roll late. Philip Rivers’ offense unstoppable right now. Making serious MVP bid.
11. Colts (6-4) (10): Peyton’s late INT sinks the Colts’ hopes in Foxboro, as the post-Super Bowl problems continue.
12. Giants (6-4) (8): Eli Manning brought the Giants back after a dismal first half, but his fumble late in the fourth dooms Giants, who have even more receiver injuries now that Hakeem Nicks is out three weeks with a leg injury.
13. Bears (7-3) (15): Julius Peppers finally has that monster game the Bears were hoping for, as he leads a 16-0 shutout in Miami and has the Bears dead even with the Pack.
14. Chiefs (6-4) (17): Chiefs in bounceback mode after the pummeling they took in Denver, as they thrash hapless Cards in KC.
15. Jaguars (6-4) (18): More late-game excellence from quarterback David Garrard, who engineers two fourth-quarter touchdown drives to hold off the Browns.
16. Raiders (5-5) (12): Raiders not only blown out by Steelers, but see team captain Richard Seymour ejected after slugging Ben Roethlisberger.
17. Redskins (5-5) (20): Give credit to the Redskins for hanging tough after getting thrashed at home by Iggles. Donovan McNabb does just enough to get past Titans on the road to remain in the NFC East race.
18. Dolphins (5-5) (16): Record-wise, the Dolphins are still in it. Realistically, it’s over. Too many injuries to overcome.
19. Titans (5-5) (14): Vince Young’s season is over because of a thumb injury. After yet another temper tantrum on Sunday, is his Titans’ career done, too?
20. Rams (4-6) (19): Two straight losses, and you’d think the Rams are just about done. Not in the wacky NFC West, where they’re only a game out of first.
21. Texans (4-6) (21): They lose last week to the Jags on a Hail Mary pass on the final play. On Sunday against the Jets, they let Mark Sanchez drive the field and finish off a dramatic comeback with a TD pass to Santonio Holmes with 10 seconds left. Don’t see Gary Kubiak surviving yet another season of mediocrity.
22. Seahawks (5-5) (22): Despite dismal performance against the defending champion Saints, Seahawks remain in first place in pro football’s worst division.
23. Cowboys (3-7) (23): Jason Garrett is 2-0 and that much closer to getting the head coaching job on a more permanent basis.
24. Browns (3-7) (25): After back-to-back wins over Saints and Pats, Brownies come close but still lose to Jets and now Jags.
25. Bills (2-8) (31): Gotta like what you’re seeing out of the Bills, who rebound from early thrashing in Cincy to blow out Bengals, as Ryan Fitzpatrick does his best rendition of Frank Reich.
25. Vikings (3-7) (24): Out with Brad Childress, in with Leslie Frazier … and Brett Favre lives to see another start.
27. Broncos (3-7) (26): Since a 6-0 start last year, Josh McDaniels is now 5-15 after blowout loss to Chargers.
28. 49ers (3-7) (27): Troy Smith lays an egg against Bucs, and 49ers slip closer to the abyss.
29. Bengals (2-8) (28): How bad is in Cincy? So bad that Chad Ochocinco admits he can’t even talk trash on Twitter because of the Bengals’ record.
30. Cardinals (3-7) (29): The post-Kurt Warner nightmare continues.
31. Lions (2-8) (30): Lions hang tough early against Pokes, but can’t keep up in 35-19 loss. Now Jim Schwartz gets to host mentor Bill Belichick for Thanksgiving Day matchup in Motor City.
32. Panthers (1-9) (32): Panthers try street free agent Brian St. Pierre at quarterback, but result is still the same.
