It's been 50 years since the greatest draft in NFL history. An amazing 11 Hall of Famers were selected, including a quarterback in the 10th round who would lead the Cowboys to two Super Bowl wins and a linebacker who never played a down in the NFL but won two Super Bowls as a head coach.
Roger Staubach, a star for Navy, was the last Hall of Famer selected in the 1964 draft, the 129th pick by the Dallas Cowboys. Why so late? Staubach had to fulfill his military obligation and didn't play for the Cowboys until 1969, when he was a 27-year-old rookie. Staubach was the quarterback for the Cowboys in the Super Bowl VI and XII wins.
Bill Parcells, a linebacker out of Wichita State, was selected in the seventh round by the Lions (89th overall). But Parcells was cut by the Lions and went into coaching. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2013 thanks to two Super Bowl titles with the Giants.
Dave Parks, a wide receiver out of Texas Tech, was the No. 1 overall pick by the 49ers and played 10 seasons with three teams. But Parks is not a Hall of Famer.
Here are the other Hall of Famers selected:
Bob Brown (Nebraska, T), second overall pick by Philadelphia
Charley Taylor (Arizona State, WR/RB), third overall pick by Washington
Carl Eller (Minnesota, DE), sixth overall pick by Minnesota
Paul Warfield (Ohio State, WR), 11th overall pick by Cleveland
Mel Renfro (Oregon, DB), 17th pick (second round) by Dallas
Paul Krause (Iowa, DB), 18th pick (second round) by Washington
Dave Wilcox (Oregon, LB), 29th pick (third round) by San Francisco
Bob Hayes (Florida A&M, WR), 88th pick (seventh round) by Dallas
Leroy Kelly (Morgan State, RB), 110th pick (eighth round) by Cleveland
It's also the 40th anniversary of the best single draft by a team in NFL history. In 1974, the Steelers selected an astonishing four Hall of Famers -- wide receivers Lynn Swann (first round, 21st pick) and John Stallworth (fourth round, 82nd pick), linebacker Jack Lambert (second round, 46th pick) and center Mike Webster (fifth round, 125th pick).
