Chiefs coach Todd Haley took a calculated risk by playing quarterback Matt Cassel extensively in the Chiefs' final preseason game on Thursday, and that gamble may have backfired.

Cassel suffered what is reported to be a rib injury and may not be ready for the Chiefs' season opener next Sunday against the Bills at Arrowhead Stadium. Kansas City sports talk radio host Nick Wright reported that Cassel suffered a rib injury and might not play against the Bills. If he can't go, untested Tyler Palko, who has never started a regular season game.

Cassel was sacked midway through the second quarterback by Green Bay defensive lineman Howard Green. The team said afterward that Cassel simply had the wind knocked out of him.
