Other shoe drops in Marshall trade; Ginn sent to 49ers

Even before the Dolphins acquired Brandon Marshall from the Broncos, speculation swirled that the team was ready to deal away former first-round receiver Ted Ginn Jr., who has become little more than a glorified kick returner with a track record of dropped passes as a receiver.

And now it's done: Ginn (pictured, left) has been shipped to the 49ers for a reported fifth-round pick in next week's draft.

Ginn will certainly be an upgrade for the 49ers' return teams, although he still needs to improve as a receiver in a big way to contribute alongside second-year man Michael Crabtree.

Maybe the only team happy about the trade — other than the 49ers for getting him and the Dolphins for getting rid of him — is the Jets. Ginn torched them in both games last season, catching a 53-yard touchdown pass in a home win in Week 5, and then firing off two kickoff returns for touchdowns in Week 8. He became the first player to return two kicks at least 100 yards in the same game.

One other interesting note in this trade: Remember the 2007 draft, when the Dolphins were soundly criticized for taking Ginn with the ninth overall pick and passing up quarterback Brady Quinn? Well, now both players are gone from their original teams. The Browns shipped Quinn to the Broncos in exchange for fullback Peyton Hillis, a sixth-round pick in 2011 and a conditional pick in 2012.
