The Panthers have entrusted Ron Rivera with turning around the NFL's worst team, and they introduced him Tuesday in Charlotte, N.C. He replaces John Fox, who was let go after Carolina went 2-14 in his ninth season.

It's the first head-coaching job at any level for Rivera, who is of Puerto Rican and Mexican heritage. Tom Flores (Raiders 1979-87; Seahawks 1992-94) is the only other Latino head coach in NFL history.

Rivera, 49, ran the Chargers' defense for the past 21/2 seasons, and it led the NFL in total defense and pass defense this season. The former Bears linebacker also was Chicago's defensive coordinator from 2004-06.

ESPN reported he received a four-year, $11.2-million deal.

Dennison seeks Denver job

John Elway interviewed a former teammate after Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams became the third candidate to spurn the Broncos.

Rick Dennison spent 24 years in Denver as a linebacker and an assistant coach. The Texans' offensive coordinator made his case to become head coach, a job he's never held. "I don't know if it's an advantage or disadvantage," he said of his strong ties to the Broncos.

After Dennison, Jaguars offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter made his pitch, and John Fox will get his chance today.

Browns speak to Fewell

The Browns have interviewed Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell to be their coach, as did Denver and Carolina. His visit means Cleveland complied with the NFL's Rooney Rule requirement to interview at least one minority candidate.
