Giants first-round defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul went through his first NFL practice this morning, showing off some of the raw talent the Giants saw in the University of South Florida pass rusher.

Of course, there was little contact and it's hard not to look good at these things. But you can see that the physical presence of the kid stands out against his peers.

About the only blip in the operation was Pierre-Paul (pictured) not running hard in an early sprint, which drew the ire of new defensive coordinator Perry Fewell. Other than that, it was all good for the rookie.

"He's hungry to learn," Giants head coach Tom Coughlin said. "That's the most important part of it all."

One thing that Pierre-Paul believes will be a huge benefit: being involved in an off-season program for the first time in his life. Pierre-Paul attended two junior colleges before going to South Florida last season, so he has never had the benefit of an off-season regimen.

"I always wound up coming in late," Pierre-Paul said. "This year, I'll be in the off-season program, and I think that will have a big impact. I'll be here learning and being like a sponge."

Pierre-Paul hopes to learn a ton from the three veteran defensive ends on the roster -- Justin Tuck, Osi Umenyiora and Mathias Kiwanuka. He has yet to meet any of them, and appeared unaware of the potential logjam created by his presence.

"I'm not concerned," he said. "I'm just going to learn from them. They're veterans. They're going to teach me the game. That's it."

How good can Pierre-Paul be?

"I think I'll be great," he said.
