Randy Moss to the Jets?
A day after wide receiver Santonio Holmes indicated he will not return to the Jets unless they offer him a multi-year deal comes word that Rex Ryan is singing the praises of wide receiver Randy Moss.
Per Greg Bedard of the Boston Globe, Ryan said in a recent interview that he considers Moss "a great vertical receiver." Moss was claimed last year by the Titans when he was released by the Vikings just a month after being acquired in a trade with the Patriots. Moss is not expected to return to Tennessee in 2011.
“Randy Moss, I’ve said all along, is a great vertical receiver,’’ Ryan said, per Bedard. "And you have to roll coverage. Most teams would have to roll coverage to him. We never did, but we got burned for a touchdown (last year against the Patriots). But he was a weapon. A vertical weapon down the field."
Meanwhile, Holmes told reporters yesterday at a sports memorabilia event in Somerset, N.J. that he would only return to the Jets in 2011 if he signed a multi-year contract. If the 2010 work rules are put in place in the event the NFL lifts its lockout, Holmes would be a restricted free agent. The Jets recently placed a first- and third-round tender on Holmes, making it prohibitive for another team to sign him to a free agent deal without giving up heavy compensation.
“I want a contract, flat out,” said Holmes, who was traded last year from the Steelers. "If I sign a contract, it will be for multiple years. It won’t be for one year ... I played five years to wait for my sixth year to come up. I don’t want to play for a one-year deal. I wouldn’t do it.”
