Patriots put Rob Gronkowski on IR

Rob Gronkowski's season is officially over.
The Patriots' All Pro tight end, who was having a terrific season after returning from multiple surgeries on his wrist and back, is done for the year after going down on Sunday with a knee injury. Gronkowski suffered a torn ACL and will require reconstructive surgery. The Patriots did the inevitable today and placed Gronkowski on injured reserve.
It's the third major injury to a Patriots' starter this season. Previously, defensive tackle Vince Wilfork (Achilles) and linebacker Jerod Mayo (pectoral muscle) were lost for the season.
It's a huge blow to the offense and quarterback Tom Brady, who had much better numbers once Gronkowski returned to the lineup.
