BEREA, Ohio — Robert Griffin III has been named the Cleveland Browns’ starting quarterback by coach Hue Jackson.

The announcement was expected after RG3 signed a two-year, $15 million free-agent contract with Cleveland during the offseason following his release from Washington. Jackson made it official on Monday, saying “it’s time” and that Griffin “has earned the right to be named the starting quarterback.”

Griffin has had a strong training camp under Jackson, who is in his first season in Cleveland. Griffin beat out veteran Josh McCown, whose future with the team is uncertain.

Jackson promised to name his starter before the exhibition opener Friday against Green Bay. Griffin, whose career has been on the decline since his rookie year with the Redskins, played well in a scrimmage last week, connecting with rookie wide receiver Corey Coleman on several long passes.
