The AFC East just got a lot more interesting: Brandon Marshall to the Fins

Three days after the Jets pulled off a stunning trade to get former Super Bowl MVP receiver Santonio Holmes from the Stillers, the Dolphins pulled off their own stunner by acquiring receiver Brandon Marshall from the Broncos for a second-round pick this year and a pick next year.

The news was first reported this morning by ESPN's Adam Schefter.

There is no questioning Marshall's credentials as a receiver. He's one of only five players in NFL history to catch at least 100 passes in three straight years, and set a single-game record with 21 receptions in a game against the Bengals last season.

But off the field, Marshall (pictured, left) has been trouble. Among his problems:

* He was arrested in 2004 while at the University of Central Florida on charges of assaulting a law enforcement officer.

* On Jan. 1, 2007, he was at a nightclub in Denver along with teammates Javon Walker and Darrent Williams, after which Williams was fatally shot in the neck. It turned out that the shooter, Willie Clark, was targeting Marshall but shot Williams instead.

* On March 26, 2007, Marshall was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence after his girfriend reported a domestic dispute. Charges were dismissed after Marshall completed anger management counseling.

* On Oct. 22, 2007, he was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. Marshall pleaded guilty to a reduced charge and was sentenced to one-year probation.

* On March 1, 2009, Marshall was arrested in Atlanta for disorderly conduct after reportedly being involved in a fight with his fiancee. The charges were dropped the next day.

* Marshall also acted out during the off-season last year, taking out his frustration over not getting a new contract by disrupting practices. He was eventually suspended for a portion of training camp by head coach Josh McDaniels.

So yes, there is plenty of risk with Marshall, who was also pursued by the Jets last season before the team traded for Braylon Edwards. But the Dolphins director of football operations, Bill Parcells, chose to consider the potential upside over the potential risk and pulled off a deal that makes them a better team today than they were yesterday.

He gives quarterback Chad Henne a major target, and will no doubt be a handful for opposing cornerbacks.
