With all the buzz about Darrelle Revis from this afternoon — and it remains to be seen whether a deal will get done this week — it appears the Jets are on the verge of signing center Nick Mangold to a long-term deal.
A source familiar with the negotiations confirms that Mangold is close to signing a contract extension. The news was first reported by Profootballtalk.com.
Mangold's deal is expected to be on par — or perhaps a bit better than — the five-year, $37.5 million deal signed last year by Jason Brown of the Rams.
It will be interesting to see what happens with the Revis negotiations now that Mangold and D'Brickashaw Ferguson, two of the Jets' "core four" players that GM Mike Tannenbaum identified as the team wanting to extend to long-term deals. The other is inside linebacker David Harris.
With Revis still holding out for a deal that averages around $16.2 million per season, the Jets have apparently concluded that it's better to get the other players' contracts done in the meantime. Whether there will be enough left to satisfy Revis' demands remains to be seen.
