An all-Long Island second round match

      There were golfers from 45 states and six foreign countries entered in the U.S. Mid-Amateur on Long Island this weekend. So what were the odds that two Long Island golfers would win their first-round matches and advance to play each other?

       That's just what happened. R.J. Nakashian of Bayville and Locust Valley High School, now a resident of  Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., beat Robbe Trout of Fort Worth, Tex. 2 and 1, one group ahead of Joe Saladino of Huntington, who defeated Raymond Floyd (son of the summer Southampton residnent and U.S. Open champ Ray Floyd) in 20 holes.

         Saladino and Nakashian never had met before they said hello on the driving range today, but they will play each other at 8:40 this morning at Atlantic Golf Club in Brindgehampton. Quite cool, except if you wanted to see two locals advance a bit further.
