Charley Hull, Jessica Korda star at Aramco Team Series event at Glen Oaks Club

Charley Hull birdied the first four holes and capped off a seven-birdie day with one on the 18th for a final round 7-under-par 65 to win the individual competition on Saturday at the inaugural Aramco Team Series event at the Glen Oaks Club in Old Westbury, a Ladies European Tour event and the first one ever held in the United States.

The team event was decided by a playoff in the dark on the floodlit par-3 17th hole. Captain Jessica Korda’s par beat out captain Sophia Popov the second time they played the hole.

The two teams finished 41-under par. Korda played with fellow pros Karolin Lampert and Lina Boqvist with amateur partner Alexandra O’Laughlin. Popov played with pros Magdalena Simmermacher and Hayley Davis with amateur Cody Crowell. The best two scores per hole counted with the amateur’s handicap used.

Hull posted a three-round total of 204, a shot ahead of World No. 1 Nelly Korda (70) and three up on Danielle Kang (70).

Talks are underway to return the event to Glen Oaks in 2022.

"Glen Oaks Club has been a brilliant venue to host the inaugural Aramco Team Series — New York," said Tom Hogg, tournament series director. "The feedback from the players and spectators has been very positive. The quality of the course is befitting of hosting the best players in the world and we have already started our discussions about bringing the Aramco Team Series back to Glen Oaks in 2022."

The membership at Glen Oaks seems to be on board.

"We looked at who the sponsors are [Saudi oil giant Aramco and Golf Saudi], we looked at the makeup of the club, the makeup of Long Island and New York in general and we thought it was important for women’s golf, first and foremost, to encourage women’s golf and women junior golfers to hold a tournament like this," said Glen Oaks Club president Jordan Ziegler, who played in Bronte Law’s foursome. "The sponsors have been very cooperative throughout. We think it’s great for New York, for Long Island, Nassau County [and] Old Westbury to have a series like this where everybody can come together."
