AUGUSTA, Ga. -- For four months late in 2010, Angel Cabrera played no golf. So how did he spend his time? "Watching golf," he said.

"I had a problem with tendinitis in the left wrist. I wanted to come back, but the doctor told me that I had to at least stop for three months," he said, adding that he has recovered enough to hit hundreds of balls lately. And he gave everyone something to watch Saturday, with a 5-under-par 67 that left him four down and in contention for another Masters title.

Major championships seem to be better medicine than rest or rehab for the 41-year-old from Cordoba, Argentina. He won the 2007 U.S. Open at Oakmont and the 2009 Masters and has as good a shot Sunday as anyone outside of leader Rory McIlroy. Cabrera will play with the 21-year-old in the final group.

Cabrera admitted he did not have much confidence Monday, having missed the cut in Houston last week. "But now that I see that I'm playing well," he said, "I sure think I can do it."

Foley teaching LIer

Sean Foley is busily high-profile now that he is helping overhaul Tiger Woods’ swing. But the Florida-based instructor has not abandoned or forgotten his other students. On the course, watching Woods, he was asked about Annie Park of Levittown and said: “She’s good. She’s going to be as good as she wants to be.”

Chip shots

Phil Mickelson didn’t catch a spark and finished with a 1-under 71, nine shots out of the lead . . . Amateur Hideki Matsuyama of Japan shot 68 and is tied with Mickelson at 3 under. He had been uncertain about even entering, unsettled over the earthquake that devastated his college town (he was in Australia at the time). “This,” he said, “is one of the best things I can do to cope with the situation.
