Fred Couples, off to a strong start in the Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship, said at his pre-tournament news conference that Tiger Woods will be on the Presidents Cup team.

Couples, the team captain, can make two picks after the top 10 players are determined on points. He said that he and Woods exchanged texts before the Bridgestone Invitational, with Woods saying that he wants to play well with Couples watching because he wants to be on the team. Couples said that he texted back, “You’ll be on the team.”

He added that he expects PGA champion Keegan Bradley to make the team on points, although the St. John’s alumnus is 18th on the points list right now.

The Presidents Cup, with the U.S. playing against the World team (excluding Europe, which plays the U.S. in the Ryder Cup), will be in Australia in November.

As for this week, in the last of the Champions Tour majors, Couples made the turn at Westchester Country Club at 4 under, then birdied the short par 4 10th to go 5 under.
