Former Long Islander Arjun Atwal moved into contention at the Byron Nelson Championship Saturday, shooting the best of round of the day for a share of third place, two strokes behind leader Ryan Palmer. In difficult winds, Atwal shot a three-under-par 67 at the TPC Four Seasons near Dallas. The former Nassau CC All-American, who won for the first time on the PGA Tour last year, is tied with Ryuji Imada. Palmer shot a 73 and second-place Sergio Garcia shot a 74. "It was tough out there," said Atwal. "It was blowing a steady 20-25 and gusting to at least 30. I played a really good round." Only eight of 74 players shot under par with Imada posting a 70.

Donald, Manassero tied at BMW

Luke Donald birdied two of his last three holes for a 1-over-par 72 and a share of the lead at the BMW PGA Championship with Italian teenager Matteo Manassero. Donald dropped five strokes on the front nine at Wentworth, but regained four of them on the back nine that left him at 5-under 208. Manassero had two birdies and three bogeys in an erratic front nine before making nine straight pars to also shoot a 72.

Irwin has share of lead at Senior PGA

Hale Irwin began the week talking about the end of his career. He energized it with a 2-under 70 to tie Kiyoshi Murota for the lead through three rounds of the Senior PGA Championship at the Valhalla Golf Club outside of Louisville. Seeking a victory that would make him the oldest winner of the oldest senior major, the 65-year-old Irwin shot a 70 with a double-bogey on the 18th. Tom Watson, the 2007 Senior PGA champion, shot a 68 and was just one shot back, with Trevor Dodds (67) at 7 under and Nick Price (73) at 6 under. Defending champion Tom Lehman, riding a string of six straight birdies, shot a 68 that got him into a tie for sixth place at 5 under with Loren Roberts (73) and David Eger (69). -- AP
