Floyd, Shinnecock member, backs another U.S. Open there
The U.S. Open is booked through 2016, but there still is a chance Long Islanders will see another one while they still can remember the previous ones. Raymond Floyd, who announced at Augusta National this week that he has played in his final Masters, said that he thinks the Open should and will return to Shinnecock Hills, where he is a member.
"I'm hearing rumors that they're getting back together again," he said of the club and the U.S. Golf Association, which runs the Open. Floyd fell in love with the East End when he won the 1986 Open at Shinnecock, and he and his wife live five months of every year in Southampton. People familiar with the USGA say officials did visit Shinnecock while they were on Long Island for the Open at Bethpage last June.
"There's no way that golf course should be out of that rotation," he said. "You poll the top players and I don't think there's a player in the world that will put it out of their top three or four."
