Maybe you were buzzing through the channels yesterday and happened to come across a tournament on GolfChannel. Nothing was wrong with your volume control. The telecast was deliberately quiet--even by golf standards.

The channel decided to show action during a Nationwide Tour event  without commentary from announcers. It was reminiscent to me of the line from a midwest columnist when he first heard that satellite radio was going to broadcast tournaments. He wrote, "That's for people who find golf on TV just too exciting."

Really, I'm all for new ideas in golf. But sometimes there can be too much quiet. It struck me that often the best parts of a golf telecast are the announcers' comments (at least those of Nick Faldo, Johnny Miller and a few of the on-course reporters--not necessarily including David Feherty; sometimes I think he might be a tad overrated).
