Grossman returns to win L.I. Junior Championship

Zach Grossman has had his share of golf achievements in his 17 years. He shot 37 in a nine-hole match for East Hampton High School as a seventh-grader, made the state high school tournament as an eighth-grader and qualified for the 2010 New York State Open.

Still, there is nothing like getting over the top. "It's great to win," Grossman said, having won the Long Island Junior Championship on Thursday at Sands Point Golf Club. He beat defending champion Dylan Crowley of Glen Cove, 4 and 2, in the morning and Clancy Waugh of Deepdale, 1-up, in the afternoon final.

Grossman credited his teacher, Montauk Downs assistant pro Paul Dickinson, for lessons on "coming over the top from the inside.

"It sounds bad. We laugh about it. But it's really more a matter of just covering the ball with your right shoulder," the champion said. Grossman played for Bishop England High School in Charleston, S.C., last season but has moved back to East Hampton for his senior year.

Locals in U.S. Amateur

U.S. Junior Amateur champion Jim Liu of Smithtown and qualifiers Joe Saladino of Huntington and Brian Hwang of Hauppauge all will tee off Monday in the U.S. Amateur at Chambers Bay in Washington state. For the USGA, it will be a trial run for the 2015 U.S. Open. For the locals, it will be a shot at a national title. Updates at Fore Long Island at newsday.com.

Ladies day

Westhampton Country Club hosts many outings every summer, but club pro Bobby Jenkins said no one remembers anything like what happened at the Ladies Member-Guest recently: two holes-in-one during the same event. Claire Riccio aced the 118-yard third hole with a 7-iron and Kelly Debusschere aced the 114-yard 11th hole with an 8-iron.
