Happy 70th, Jack Nicklaus

            Jack Nicklaus turns 70 today, still working, still involved in golf and still holding every reason to receive accolades as the greatest golfer ever.

           When Tiger Woods passes Nicklaus' record of 18 major championships, he will earn that title. Not today. Here's a toast to Nicklaus, who set the bar for Woods as a golfer and as a family man and person. Here's hoping Woods can aspire to match Nicklaus in all three.

           Golf Channel is admirably doing much to mark the occasion for the Golden Bear. So should everyone in golf. Nicklaus has become more mellow and dignified over the years. It will be good to see him join Arnold Palmer as honorary starter at the Masters in April. It will be great to see him enjoy the 2014 U.S. Women's Open at Sebonack Golf Club in Southampton, the course he co-designed.

          As for Woods, it appears that he is in rehab for sex addiction. Who knows what that means for his golf schedule? But you have to think that it will accelerate it. Getting back to work no doubt will be a good part of his aftercare. Plus, he can cite confidentiality of his treatment so he doesn't have to go into great detail about his life having come unglued.

        In any event, this is Nicklaus' day. May he accept the thanks and respect from a golf public.
