Kelly Shon of Port Washington is among the leaders after her first round of the U.S. Women's Amateur. As of late Monday afternoon, with some golfers still on the course, her round of 1-under-par 71 at Charlotte (N.C.) Country Club was tied for 12th.

In any case, she is in good position heading into the second of two days of stroke-play qualifying. The field of 156 plays both of those days, with the top 64 making it to stroke play starting Wednesday.

Shon was born in South Korea and came to Long Island when her father, a doctor, came to New York for a year to work at the Hospital for Special Surgery. The family liked it and stayed. She took up golf as a youth to fill out her mother's foursome. She played for hte Port Washington boys team, placed second in this year's Nassau County tournament and qualified for the state championship.
