Justin Rose's win Sunday in the BMW Championship, the penultimate PGA Tour playoff event, might have caught some by surprise, but not John Braunreuther, the assistant caddiemaster at Friar's Head in Riverhead. Braunreuther carried for Rose a few days earlier at the end of the pro's golf vacation with buddies on Long Island.

Rose looked smooth and confident at Friar's Head. "We were walking along and I'm saying, 'You're going to win. Believe me, I caddied for Luke Donald, the No. 1 player in the world, and you're just as good if not better than him,' " Braunreuther said. "He looked at me like he was shocked. But I think he's going to win the FedEx Cup, too."

Nice shot

At 51, Larry Mangan figures he doesn't have many years left to hit par-5 greens in two. "So, this was pretty special," he said of the 193-yard 5-iron for double-eagle on the 505-yard fifth at West Sayville.
