The course that used to be known as Olde Vine Golf Club in Riverhead has a new name, new logo, new pro and new direction.
"A new everything," said Marla Greenspan, a member of the committee that is handling the transition to new management. Now called The Vineyards, it will be run by the members.
"We want to start with a clean slate," said Greenspan, who lives in the housing development on the property, but pointed out that not all of the members do. "We want this to be a casual, friendly social and golf club that appeals to everyone, from beginners to low handicappers."
She said that the official legal paperwork will be completed soon and that a board of directors will be assembled. The members are proud to have recruited new head pro Louis de Kerillis from Sebonack in Southampton, site of last year's U.S. Women's Open. He grew up caddying at Shinnecock Hills and National Golf Links, tried his hand at tour golf and caddied for then-amateur phenom Lydia Ko at the 2013 Open, using the knowledge he developed as an assistant at Sebonack since it opened in 2006.
Leaving the exclusive, high-end club was hard. "But I sat down with the members here. They have such a passion for this," de Kerillis said. "I see this as another great challenge in my life."
Marinaro promoted at Muttontown
The Muttontown Club, which will host the Long Island PGA later this month, promoted Christopher Marinaro from first assistant to head pro. Marinaro has worked at Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head, S.C. (site of the PGA Tour's annual post-Masters tournament) and Upper Montclair (N.J.) Country Club.
Fact of the week
Glen Head Country Club originally was Women's National, established by Marion Hollins. It inspired Alister MacKenzie to agree to design her West Coast course, Cypress Point. While out there in the 1930s, MacKenzie played with Hollins and Bobby Jones. During the visit, Jones convinced MacKenzie to design the course he was planning in Augusta, Ga.
Drive, Chip and Putt applications
Applications for the next Drive, Chip and Putt contest are being accepted at www.drivechipandputt.com. The road to the final at Augusta National before next year's Masters includes local qualifiers this summer at Colonial Springs in East Farmingdale, Sunken Meadow in Kings Park and Harbor Links in Port Washington. The sub-regional will be at Eisenhower Red and the regional final will be at Bethpage Green.
The parents of Sayville's Sean Haselton, who participated at Augusta last Sunday, said their family didn't fully appreciate the experience until they were back on the grounds for a Masters practice round on Tuesday.
