Law school awaits

Ryan Hom, an amateur who plays out of Bethpage, was impressive at the New York State Open this past week. He was under par in two of his three rounds and tied for 15th. You'd think that would auger well for future tournaments. It might, but it won't be the near future.

Hom said he is headed to Hofstra Law School and that his competitive golf schedule will be on hold "at least for a few years."

Also on the education front, Michael Furci of Sayville, who made the cut at the State Open, said his progress definitely accelerated this past year, after he transferred from DePaul to the University of Florida. The latter offers a better climate and better courses. "The coach at DePaul was really nice about it," Furci said. "She gave me my release, so I didn't have to sit out a year."

Clarification

Reader Edward Olmstead of Farmingdale reports that he was a walking scorer during the third round of the 2009 U.S. Open and recalls that Ricky Barnes did reach 11 under par. That was two better than Rob Labritz was during the State Open and believed to be the lowest ever at any point in a tournament on the Black Course.
