Mickelson goes quietly at the Barclays

PARAMUS, N.J.- Phil Mickelson went quietly.

One of the marquee golfers at The Barclays, who also is one of Barclays' prime spokesmen, shot 3-over-par 74 in his second round to go 4-over for the event at Ridgewood Country Club on Friday and almost assuredly will miss the cut.

Despite the support he typically receives in the New York area, Mickelson never could get anything going. He was behind a tree on No. 3, where he made a bogey 6, and had trouble with a bunker on No. 9, where he made double bogey 6. His four birdies were not enough to offset his poor holes.

Then Mickelson left without speaking to the media, at least in the first hour after his round.

So it was a short week for Mickelson and one that was totally overshadowed by his rival Tiger Woods, who made a 5-foot, 7-inch putt for birdie on No. 18, his ninth hole of the day, to make the turn at 8-under par, leading Kevin Streelman by one stroke. Streelman shot 8-under-par 63 in the morning wave.
