Nassau Invitational win caps strong season for Saladino
Joe Saladino said that his season will be over after his trip to France this week to represent the Metropolitan Golf Association in a team match. "Like I do every year," he said, "I'll look back on some of the things I need to work on a little bit and how I need to get better."
He will have a hard time critiquing last weekend. Coming off a solid showing in the U.S. Mid-Amateur at Atlantic Golf Club, he won the venerable Nassau Invitational. Saladino shot 7-under par 63 in the first round and had club officials trying to decide this week whether it will count as an official course record. They were debating whether it should stand because the lift, clean and place rule was in effect.
In any event, Saladino can take pride in knowing that Bobby Jones, Tommy Armour, Walter Travis and many others (including Babe Ruth) played the course and never had a score so low. Also, the win boosted him past the 1,000-point mark in the MGA Player of the Year standings, more than 50 points ahead of Evan Beirne of St. John's University (Saladino's alma mater).
Competitions
Jeff Schwind and Matt Dobyns of Deepdale Golf Club shot 9-under par 135 at Noyac Golf Club and the Bridge Monday and Tuesday to win the Met PGA Team Championship.
Robin Corwith and Hanneke Gold of Montauk Downs shot 8-under par 64 to win the MGA Women's Net Team Championship Tuesday at Glen Ridge (N.J.) Country Club.
Five Long Island pros will be in the field this weekend for the Senior PGA Professional National Championship in California: Mike Caporale of North Hills, Jack Druga of Shinnecock Hills, Dave Gosiewski of Noyac, Tom Joyce of Glen Oaks and Darrell Kestner of Deepdale.
