Phil Mickelson on the course
Phil Mickelson, the only man with a chance at the Grand Slam this season since winning his third Masters in April, began the Open with a perfect 333-yard drive down the middle of the 495-yard, par-4 10th hole. It's a much tougher starting hole than the 380-yard first hole. Mickelson's 9-iron approach is on the green. Mickelson left his birdie putt short. He and playing partners Padraig Harrington and Y.E. Yang all started with pars.
Skies are gray and temperatures are cool in the mid-50s. With the lead groups having completed five holes, only four players are under par at -1, including Scott Verplank, Rafael Cabrera-bello, Soren Kjeldsen and Hiroyuki Fujita.
