Port Washington's Shon impresses at U.S. Amateur

Port Washington teenager Kelly Shon is on her way to Princeton, and, from the looks of her week at the U.S. Women's Amateur, she also is on her way to a place on the national scene.

Shon was impressive in two rounds of stroke play at Charlotte (N.C.) Country Club and easily won her first two matches against strong opponents before losing in the round of 16 to Stephanie Sherlock, the top women's amateur in Canada.

She was loath to accept congratulations, though. "I was a little disappointed," Shon said on her way back. "I thought I had a good chance to go a little further." She said the course set up well for her and that she made putts when she needed them. Shon added that having played from the back tees in the 2010 boys state high school championship had boosted her confidence on long courses.

Altchek takes title

Chloe Altchek of Maidstone Club in East Hampton won the Long Island Women's Amateur championship at Bethpage Red on Wednesday by one stroke over Denise Martorana of Southampton Golf Club. The winner, who will enter her sophomore year at Harvard, is the daughter of longtime Mets physician Dr. David Altchek.

Scrambling hole-in-one

James Lichtenberger of Bethpage, enrolled in the golf course management program at SUNY Delhi, is interning at the Town of Oyster Bay's Gold Coast Golf Center. He is teaching campers to play golf and recently he instructed by example. Hitting on the par-4 11th hole from 220 yards, he used a 2-hybrid and made a hole-in-one. He and three campers were teammates in a scramble, in which all players hit from the team's previous best shot. "They had been saying, 'Coach, we're down. Do something,' " Lichtenberger said. "That time, they didn't even have to putt."
