Raynor of host club makes Travis semis
The stiff, persistent wind made Garden City Golf Club a completely different animal Saturday, during the first two rounds of match play at the 100th Walter J. Travis Invitational—but maybe not a totally unrecognizable animal. Jed Raynor of the host club reached the semifinals Sunday morning with two wins.
Raynor scored a 1-up victory over Chuck Del Priore of Wykagyl in the quarterfinal this afternoon. He will play Jay Crowley of Round Hill in Greenwich, Connecticut Sunday. Crowley defeated T.J. Brudzinski of Worthington Hills (Ohio) 2 up in the afternoon, after having had the longest match of the tournament in the morning. Crowley defeated Eoin (pronounced Owen) O’Connor in 20 holes.
In the other semifinal, Brad Shaw of the Los Angeles Country Club will play Ben Hayes of Whisper Rock Club in Scottsdale, Az. Shaw defeated Eaoghan (also pronounced Owen) O’Connell of the Fox Club in Florida, 1-up. Hayes beat Tom Yellin of Stanwich, 3 and 2.
After the matches Saturday, the club was scheduled to have a special Former Champions Dinner to mark the 100th Travis tournament, named for one of golf’s pioneers and great ambassadors.
