Richardson tourney a rite of spring
Sixty years ago this week, Johnny Humm of Rockville Centre defeated Jim Oleska of Brooklyn, 4 and 3, at the Seawane Club in Hewlett Harbor to win the William D. Richardson Memorial, an event that officially opened the Long Island golf season, The New York Times reported back then.
It was the first time the tournament, named for the late Times sports reporter, was a singles competition after two years of team play. The Long Island Golf Association has been holding it that way ever since. The Richardson begins again Thursday at Seawane with the leading area amateurs playing a qualifying round before match play Friday and Saturday.
Casey Calmi, last year's champion, will not be there to defend his title. Like many Richardson winners, he turned pro.
