Thorpe sentenced to a year in prison
A sad golf story. Jim Thorpe, who won two consecutive Champions Tour events at Eisenhower Park, has been sentenced to a year in jail for having failed to pay $2 million in income taxes, Associated Press reported.
According to the story, Thorpe will turn himself in before April 1, will serve his time and then do community service. He also is expected to try to pay back the taxes.
Especially disheartening is the fact that, at Commerce Bank Championship media day at Eisenhower five years ago, Thorpe acknowledged that he always had been a big gambler. He said at the time he had been in every casino and at every race track in the country. "I got sick of it," he said, adding that he had donated every penny of a recent $250,000 first-prize check to his church in Florida.
