Three matches in one day at Mid-Am

         Let's play three.

         Not even Ernie Banks ever did what the semifinalists at the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship did on Wednesday at Bridgehampton's Atlantic Golf Club. They had to finish the Round of 16 in the morning, advance to the quarterfinals at midday and go on to the semifinals in the afternoon.

          "You just kind of close your eyes and just play," said defending champion Nathan Smith, who did it as well as anyone. He closed out Todd Burgan, 5 and 3, in the early evening to advance to the Thursday final against either Tim Hogarth of Northridge, Calif. or Sean Knapp of Oakmont, Pa.

            The wacky schedule was the residue of the 4 1/2-hour weather delay on Tuesday. The USGA insisted on at least starting the third round, and did so, in hopes of getting the event done on time Thursday. There's supposed to be a 36-hole final Thursday, but forecasts of soaking rain and tough wind might intrude. Then again, if they can play three rounds in a day, can't they play two in the rain?
