It's getting later in the day, and the grass has grown just enough at Pebble Beach to slow the greens just a touch. Both Tiger Woods and Ernie Els left the first putts on No. 9 well short and wound up three-putting for bogey.

Els missed in tentative fashion from about eight feet, and Woods' six-footer just grazed the edge of the cup. That left Woods at 1-over 36 after hitting nine greens in regulation, a disappointing total considering how well he's played tee to green. Els dropped back to even par.
