If you happen to be in a match against Ralph Folz on Laurel Links, his home course, don't expect to pick up any ground on the 136-yard fifth hole. On May 7, the 16 handicap was playing with his wife and another couple and hit a 7-wood into the wind toward the uphill green. The ball bounced right and rolled directly into the hole.

Six days later, the pin was in the same spot when he and a fellow member were in a match against two other golfers. One of the opponents hit it within six feet. "He was feeling pretty good,'' Folz said. "Then my partner said, 'You know, Ralph had a hole-in-one here last week.' ''

This time there was no wind, so Folz used a 9-wood. Sure enough, the ball bounced right and rolled directly into the hole. "We were all in shock,'' Folz said. "We were jumping up and down like schoolkids.''

He didn't get a chance to play there again during the week, but is scheduled for a match today. Watch out.

Dunham misses out

Islanders goalie coach Mike Dunham made four birdies in the final five holes of a local U.S. Open qualifier at Bernardston, Mass., and shot 74. But he lost on the second hole of a playoff for a spot at the June 6 sectional qualifier in Summit, N.J. Dunham, a club pro's son, is the first alternate from his site.
