Tiger bogeyed the par-3 fourth so he is back where he started the round, at 4 under. He does have three par 5s to go, and that could be 5 under right there.

         Ricky Barnes, who nearly won the U.S. Open at Bethpage last  year after having done little since he was an amateur, is at it again. He made birdies on 2 and 3 and is 6 under, one behind Couples. Barnes became a national name in 2003, here, when he was second after the first round and third after the second as an amateur.
