The U.S. Walker Cup team left Aberdeen, Scotland, recently with motivation for the next match, which will be held two years from now at the National Golf Links of America in Southampton.
National hosted the first Walker Cup -- an amateur competition against Great Britain and Ireland -- in 1922 when Bobby Jones and Francis Ouimet were on the team but has not held it since. Given the favored American team's 14-12 loss this month, the 2013 event should have extra flavor. "You know, there's a few of us who are going to be eligible for the one in two years," U.S. player Jordan Spieth said, "and I'm going to work hard to try to make that team."
Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy all have played in the Walker Cup, as have Long Islanders Len Mattiace and Ralph Howe III.
A 10-spot
Alan Golus' foursome scored a perfect 10 recently on the 179-yard 11th hole at the Village Club of Lake Success. Golus made a hole-in-one, Henry Tucker made a birdie 2, Archie Abrams had a 3 and Jay Chudnoff had a 4.
