Watson to miss cut? Ishikawa won't
In what could be his final U.S. Open, Tom Watson is in danger of missing the cut.
After shooting a seven-over 78 on Thursday, the 60-year-old Watson bogeyed the 17th and is at even par through 17 today, seven-over for the tournament. The current projected cut is five-over, or 10 shots from the lead, although things could change. The gallery seems to understand the significance of the situation, giving Watson a rousing ovations. But if Watson can stay where he is, he may be able to hang on.
Watson's 18-year-old playing mate Ryo Ishikawa will not only make the cut, but will be in contention heading into the weekend after moving to one-under for the tournament to pull into a tie for second.
The final member of the grouping, 21-year-old Rory McIlroy, has bogeyed seven holes today en route to a seven-over for the day, and 11-over for the tournament. Disappointing showing for the youngster.
