Y.E. Yang makes three birdies in a row

     This is what I was referring to in the column in today's paper. The likes of Y.E. Yang make it tough for Tiger Woods to dominate the way he did early in the 2000s. Yang, who beat Woods head-to-head at the 2009 PGA (unthinkable up to then) is a good, tough, strong-willed competitor. He was two shots out of the lead yesterday and started with a bogey. But he has birdied Nos. 2, 3 and 4 and is tied for first at 7 under. First-round co-leaders Alvaro Quiros and Rory McIlroy tee off later.

        Even if Yang doesn't stay at the top, there is going to be someone like him who is capable of having a really good week in the heat of a major. It's a deep, deep field these days.

       By the way, although the forecast had been good for the week, it does look downright threatening out there. Cloudy.
