 1. LONG ISLAND LUTHERAN BOYS BASKETBALL Achraf Yacoubou is surrounded by talent, including Bay Shore transfer Jordan Allen. The Crusaders lost starter Anthony Brutus, who transferred from the school this week.

2. HALF HOLLOW HILLS WEST BOYS BASKETBALL Half Hollow Hills West is the team to beat in Suffolk’s Class AA, with Tavon Sledge and Emile Blackman leading the way. The Colts earned the Long Island Class AA title last year and are expected to repeat.

3. SACHEM EAST BOYS BOWLING They won the school’s first Suffolk title since 2000 last year and finished fourth in the state tournament. Jeremy Milito, who had Suffolk’s third highest average as a junior, returns to the lead the Flaming Arrows.

4. LONGWOOD WRESTLING The Lions went 5-0 at the Lee Van Slyke Duals at Burnt Hills. They also took first at the Baldwin Tournament last week.

5. ST. ANTHONY’ S GIRLS BASKETBALL The Friars opened the week with a dominant win over pre-season favorite St. John the Baptist. The Friars won 52-39 and held a 38-15 lead at the half. Symone Kelly had 15 points and 12 rebounds. The Friars then beat Holy Trinity 65-52 behind 18 points from Lauren Williams. They capped the week with a 58-38 win over JFK, which is one of the top teams in the PSAL.

6. GLENN WRESTLING The Knights were idle this week after winning the Bethpage last week to open the season. Has a 59-dual meet winning streak.

7. EAST ISLIP GIRLS BOWLING The Redmen are off to a 5-0 start and find themselves in a familiar position: leading the county with a 996.5 team average. East Islip has yet to drop a game. Tara Ernst, Lena Sorrentino and Nancy Baione are all in the top 10 among the league leaders.

8. WARD MELVILLE GIRLS FENCING The Patriots have won nine straight Long Island championships. And No. 11 is in order in 2011! They have 128 consecutive dual meet wins.

9. WARD MELVILLE BOYS FENCING The Patriots have won four straight Long Island crowns and try to keep pace with the girls in their own district.

10. ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST GIRLS BASKETBALL The Cougars opened the week with a 52-39 loss to St. Anthony’s, but bounced back with a 59-35 win over Kellenberg. Kamala Thompson scored 16 points and she had 19 points and nine rebounds in a 60-48 win over McKee/Staten Island Tech.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Ugo Nwaigwe, Valley Stream South, girls basketball: She had 25 points, 10 rebounds, and 11 blocked shots in a 38-33 win over Manhasset. She had 26 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 blocked shots in a 45-30 win over East Rockaway.

Symone Kelly, St. Anthony's, girls basketball: Kelly had 15 points and 12 rebounds in a 52-39 win over St. John the Baptist and scored 38 points in three games.

Maddie Jankowski, St. Mary's, girls basketball: Jankowski scored 66 points in three games, including 28 in a 76-64 win over Manhasset.

Celine Jolicoeur, Sewanhaka, girls basketball: The junior scored a career-high 32 points and had five steals in a 64-59 win over Plainedge.

Tara Ernst, East Islip, girls bowling: She rolled a 277 in Game 3 of a 735 series to lead East Islip over North Babylon in their last match on Dec. 14. Her score was the highest game of the season thus far.

Kelly Skalacki, Middle Country, girls bowling: The freshman had high games of 269 and 249 last week, helping get the Cougarines off to a 6-0 start. Skalacki leads all girls with a 213.7 average.

Greg Reed, Commack, boys bowling: The junior rolled his first 300 game in high school competition in a win over Smithtown.

Jordan Bernstein, Jericho, boys swimming: Junior Bernstein broke his own school record in the one-meter dive (226.05) on Dec. 14. Bernstein's previous record, set last year, was a 213. His 2010 score is currently the highest in Nassau.
