Adeniran, Powers lead Sewanhaka boys win

The fire alarm went off inside New Hyde Park high school, but it didn't heat up the shooting of Sewanhaka or Herricks Friday night. Shella Adeniran said the heck with shooting percentage.

The Sewanhaka big man's dunk with 5:14 left in the fourth quarter gave the Indians enough to overcome Herricks, 50-42, in final of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic.

Adeniran, who finished with 10 points, was named to the All-Tournament team along with David Rust. Kevin Powers scored 13 points and was named tournament MVP. It was Powers' assist that set up Adeniran's dunk that made it 38-33.

"It gave us some spirit," Adeniran said of his two-handed slam, "and it came from the MVP. We knew we weren't going to walk off the court without a win."

The Indians (2-0) never trailed after Corey Jones drained a three-pointer to make it 12-11 with 1:01 to play in the first quarter.

But Kevin Villaneuva made things interesting when he sank three-pointers on back-to-back possessions to pull Herricks within 45-42. Rust hit two free throws and Shireem Cobb (11 points) made three more to ice it.

Andrew Fellus led the Highlanders (1-1) with a game-high 17 points. Connetquot 53, Centereach 48:Antwon Pevy hit two free throws with 14 seconds left to seal the victory for Connetquot against Centereach in non-league. Pevy scored 17 points and had four assists and Casey Baker scored 12 points for Connetquot. James Tuccillo scored 13 points and Mike Wiedemann scored 10 for Centereach.

Southold 49, Rocky Point 39: Winston Wilcenski scored a game-high 25 points and added five assists for Southold, which was down by one with 4:28 left and ended the game with a 15-4 run to seal the win in the consolation game of the Southold Invitational. Andreas Vouliakif had 14 points for Rocky Point (1-2).

Commack 62, Northport 60:Dillon Hertel scored 20 points, including a three-pointer and a free throw in the final minutes, to lead Commack in non-league. Nick Arnold added 13 points and eight rebounds, all in the second half. Neil Nembhard had 10 points and his free throws with 50 seconds left created the final margin.

Sayville 60, Shoreham-Wading River 54:Chris Lowe and James Rupp each scored 18 points and had three three-pointers in the second half to lead Sayville in non-league. Kevin Davis scored a game-high 23 points for Shoreham-Wading River in the loss.
