The bus ride to the Binghamton area from Cold Spring Harbor after school Tuesday took six long hours.
The Seahawks took the bus back Wednesday night without the parting gift they wanted — a win in the Class B boys basketball regional semifinals.
“It’s been a long couple of days for us,” coach Jason Mercurio said after the season ended with a 64-46 loss to Section IV champ Windsor Central at Johnson City.
But there was a positive despite the negative of falling after getting an at-large berth.
“I think it’s a great experience,” Mercurio said. “Anytime they get an opportunity to experience something like this, I think it’s something they’ll remember for a long time.”
Windsor Central (14-10), which was topped by Nico Soriano’s 16 points, led 41-26 at halftime.
The Seahawks (12-9) made a run, but the advantage was back up to 53-40 after three. Graham Lynch led them with 10 points.
“I was proud of the team,” Mercurio said. “They overachieved all year long.”
They had five new starters. Now 10 seniors will depart.
“I think we have some returning players that have been biding their time this year,” Mercurio said. “… I feel like we’re set up to have a successful league season next year.”
